CMS Releases Updated Payment and Utilization Data for DMEPOS
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released an updated list of data as part of the Provider Utilization and Payment Files. This was done in an effort to increase transparency and accountability for CMS providers.
This data set, called Referring Provider Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) Public Use File (PUF), provides information on physicians and other healthcare professionals who referred DMEPOS products and services, such as wheelchairs, walkers and diabetes supplies for Medicare beneficiaries.
This data set is part of a larger initiative under the Affordable Care Act to provide not only affordable care, but also a higher quality of care and smarter spending of health care dollars. By providing this data, CMS is helping to increase the insight and innovation surrounding how health care is delivered in the US.
The data collected and released in this updated list is a collection of Part-B non-institutional DMEPOS claims from the 2013 calendar year. It provides information on roughly 385,000 providers and over 100 million claims. A link to the data as well as a fact sheet and break down is available on the CMS website.
