OMHA Staff Exempt from Federal Hiring Freeze in an Effort to Reduce Backlog
An internal memo was recently released within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) suggesting that certain key positions at the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals (OMHA) and Departmental Appeals Board will be exempt from the federal hiring freeze put into place by President Trump in January 2017.
According to HHS, this exemption is necessary to cut down on a backlog of appeals which has been one of the major challenges faced by the department in recent years. In December of last year, HHS was ordered by the US District Court to eliminate the backlog of Medicare claims appeals pending at OMHA by 2021.
CHAP will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as they are made available.
