CMS Nominee Begins Senate Finance Committee Hearings
Last week, Seema Verma testified before lawmakers on the Senate Finance Committee following her nomination to become administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This role is expected to be influential in the process to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) under the new presidential administration.
Verma would work closely alongside newly confirmed Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price on not only the repeal of ACA but also any future changes to Medicaid and Medicare under the new administration.
During the hearing, Verma highlighted her views on Medicaid in that it is an important safety net for the country’s most vulnerable citizens, but that it is currently not working well and needs critical improvements. She views her role in this as one to implement and enforce change, not to craft legislation.
