Social Security Numbers to be Replaced on New Medicare Cards

The Medicare Access and CHIP Re-authorization Act (MACRA) of 2015, requires the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to remove Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) and be used for Medicare billing, eligibility status, and claim status. The MBI is confidential like the SSN and should be protected as Personally Identifiable Information. Home health agencies will need to switch over to MBIs starting April 2018.

CMS is planning a wide-scale outreach to inform beneficiaries to bring their new Medicare cards and share them when they receive medical care. For more information on this, visit the CMS website.
